Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: self- prefix, will v.1, -ing suffix2, willing adj.
Etymology: < self- prefix + will v.1 + -ing suffix2, after self-will n. In later use directly < self- prefix + willing adj. Compare self-will adj. and later self-willed adj., self-willy adj.With use in Old English (see sense 1) compare Old Icelandic sjálfviljandi of one's own free will, voluntary. Compare also the Old English derivative adverb selfwillendlīce self-determinedly, arbitrarily ( < self-willing adj. + -ly suffix2). Apparently re-formed in the 16th cent.
