Etymology: < self- prefix + deprecation n., perhaps as an alteration of self-depreciation n. Compare earlier self-deprecating adj.
Disparagement of oneself or one's actions, abilities, etc., often humorously or out of false modesty. Cf. self-depreciation n.Now more common than self-depreciation: see note at that entry.
