Security Council n. (in full United Nations Security Council; also U.N. Security Council) a council of the United Nations (established 1945: see United Nations n.) charged with maintaining international peace and security and having fifteen member states, of which five (China, France, Britain, the United States, and Russia) are permanent and have the power of veto, the others being elected for two-year terms.
