Etymology: < self- prefix + tormentor n. Compare earlier self-torment n., self-tormenting n., self-tormenting adj.In quot. 1712 after classical Latin Heauton Timorumenos, the title of a play by Terence ( < Hellenistic Greek Ἑαυτὸν τιμωρούμενος , lit. ‘punishing oneself’, the title of a play by Menander that does not survive). Compare self-punisher n. at self- prefix 1c(b).
