Etymology: < self- prefix + steering n.
With reference to a vessel, vehicle, etc.: the action of automatically steering or maintaining a predetermined course; (now also) the action of steering itself and adjusting its own course autonomously in response to external circumstances (cf. self-driving adj. 2c). Also: a facility or system for achieving this; the apparatus by which this is achieved. Frequently (and in earliest use) attributive, as self-steering gear, self-steering sail, etc.
