6. Printing. The sign §, originally used to introduce the number of a ‘section’ (sense 2b); subsequently used also as a mark of reference to notes in the margin or at the foot of a page. Also called section-mark.The primary use of the sign seems to have become rare in the 18th cent., and to have been revived in the latter part of the 19th cent. under German influence. German printers give to this mark the name of paragraph.
