Etymology: In early use (with reference to fire) probably a variant of scrimple v.; perhaps compare Middle Low German schrumpeln to shrink, shrivel, Middle Dutch schrompelen to contract, shrink, and earlier scrumple n. In later use probably a variant of crumple v., showing variation between scr- and cr- (see note at S n.1).
Originally Scottish and English regional (northern).
transitive. To crumple, to wrinkle; esp. to crush into a compact mass (see scrunch v. 2). Also frequently with up.
