单词 scroo
释义

scroon.

Brit. /skruː/, U.S. /skru/, Scottish English /skru/
Forms: 1600s skrow, 1700s scrow, 1700s– screw, 1800s skree, 1800s skrew, 1800s– scroo, 1800s– skroo, 1900s skru.
Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Norn.
Etymology: Apparently < the unattested Norn reflex (with loss of the final consonant) of the early Scandinavian word represented by Old Icelandic skrúf haycock, corn-rick, Old Norwegian skrúfr top (Norwegian (Nynorsk) skruv (also regional skru) top part of something, corn-rick, stack of turf, woman's ornamental headdress), Old Swedish skruver bishop's mitre (Swedish regional skruv, applied to various cone-shaped objects), Danish regional skrue corn-rick, stack of turf, of uncertain origin. The distribution of the word is wider than would normally be expected for a borrowing from Norn; compare note at definition. This may reflect a parallel borrowing from early Scandinavian, or (perhaps more likely) the word may have spread within English.
Scottish (northern, chiefly Orkney, Shetland, and Caithness).
A small stack of corn, hay, or straw. Ling. Atlas Scotl. (1975) I. 257, 261 records the word from Orkney, Caithness, Sutherland, Morayshire, and Aberdeenshire.
