单词 scrivano
释义

scrivanon.

Brit. /skrɪˈvɑːnəʊ/, U.S. /skrɪˈvænoʊ/, /skrɪˈvɑnoʊ/
Forms: 1500s–1600s scriuano, 1500s– scrivano, 1600s scrivanno, 1600s scryuana, 1600s–1700s skrivano, 1700s scrivani (plural).
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian scrivano; Spanish scribano.
Etymology: Partly < Italian scrivano (see escrivain n.), and partly < Spanish scribano (11th cent.; now escribano (beginning of the 12th cent.); < classical Latin scrība scribe n.1 + Spanish -ano -an suffix). Compare earlier scrivan n., scrivein n., and later escrivan n.The form scryuana probably reflects uncertainty about the quality of unstressed final vowels in Romance loanwords (compare discussion at -ado suffix). In plural form scrivani (see quot. 1784) after the Italian plural form.
Now historical and rare.
A clerk, secretary, or scribe; (also occasionally) a notary; = scrivener n. 1a, 1b. Frequently in Italian or Spanish-speaking contexts.
