Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin scripturarius, scriptuarius.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin scripturarius (1569 or earlier in this sense), already in classical Latin as scrīptūrārius (noun) person who collects tax paid for grazing rights, (adjective) of or connected with the tax paid for grazing rights (in an 8th-cent. epitome of a 2nd-cent. grammarian) < classical Latin scrīptūra scripture n. + -ārius -ary suffix1. Compare earlier scripturer n., Scripturian adj., Scripturian n., and slightly later Scripturarian n. In γ. forms perhaps < post-classical Latin scriptuarius (1508 or earlier), variant (perhaps after textuarius textuary adj.) of scripturarius.In use with specific reference to the Karaites after post-biblical Hebrew qĕrāīm, plural noun (see Karaite n.). Compare scripturist n. in the same sense. With the β. forms compare the following earlier examples of post-classical Latin scripturarius in an English context:1601 N. Gibbons Questions & Disputations conc. Holy Script. iii. 147 Those which maintaine the authoritie of Scripture, to be aboue the church of Rome, they tearme by a new name Scripturarios.1619 J.
