Etymology: < post-classical Latin scripturarius (see Scripturary n.) + -an suffix. In use with specific reference to the Karaites after post-biblical Hebrew qĕrāīm, plural noun (see Karaite n.). Obsolete.

A person who believes that scripture is the sole authority for faith and religious practice, or advocates a strict adherence to the literal interpretation of scripture; spec. a member of a Jewish sect recognizing only the Hebrew scriptures (and not the Talmud) as religious authority; a Karaite.
