Etymology: < post-classical Latin scriptorium writing-room, especially in a monastery (early 11th cent.; from 12th cent. in British sources; earlier denoting a stylus for writing on wax (a636 in Isidore)) < classical Latin script- , past participial stem of scrībere to write (see scribe n.¹) + -ōrium -orium suffix. Compare earlier scriptory n. Compare also earlier scriptor n.¹, which ultimately derives < the same Latin etymon.
