Compare escritoire n., scriptor n.3, scritory n., scrutoire n.With the Older Scots forms compare -or suffix.
Obsolete.
A portable case for holding writing equipment; spec. a pen-case.

Etymology: Probably an alteration (after script n.1, scripture n., or post-classical Latin scriptorium scriptorium n.) of scrutoire n. (compare α. forms at that entry). Compare earlier scritory n. and later escritoire n.
Now historical.
A writing desk fitted with drawers or compartments for storing papers and other items, and typically with a hinged front that may be lowered to provide a writing surface; a writing bureau, an escritoire.
