Etymology: Partly (i) an alteration of scrite n. after classical Latin scrīptum (see below), and partly (ii) < classical Latin scrīptum set of signs or characters, inscription, set of written words, writing, written communication, written version of a speech, actual text of a document, written composition, literary work, use as noun of neuter past participle of scrībere to write (see scribe n.1).
