Originally U.S. Nautical. Now rare.
Small articles, typically of ivory or bone, decorated with engraved designs, originally produced (esp. from whalebone or whales' teeth) by seamen employed on whaling ships, as a means of passing the time during long voyages; = scrimshaw n. Now only attributive in scrimshandy work, in the same sense (cf. scrimshaw work n. (a) at scrimshaw n. Compounds 2).
