A sequence of digital records linked using encryption and distributed and managed typically in a peer-to-peer network, used esp. by cryptocurrencies as a secure and verifiable ledger of transactions; the technology underpinning this.The first blockchain was created as a secure public ledger for the cryptocurrency Bitcoin (Bitcoin n.).Each record or ‘block’ in a blockchain includes a timestamp and an encrypted representation of the preceding block in the sequence, making it virtually unchangeable, since any change to the data in a block would be apparent unless every subsequent block were also altered.

2011 bitcoinj 14 Mar. (Usenet newsgroup, accessed 9 July 2021) As receiving the entire block chain (at least once) seems currently to be only way to determine the balance of the wallet, I'd say the method is currently a bit useless.
