Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin sē ipse.
Etymology: < classical Latin sē ipse himself ( < , reflexive pronoun + ipse : see ipse pron.), where the nominative form ipse is used rather than the accusative ipsum, as it is attracted to the case of the subject.In sense A. perhaps short for post-classical Latin se ipse pinxit ‘he painted (it) himself`’ (1808 or earlier).

Of a portrait: done by oneself; that is a self-portrait. Obsolete. rare.In quot. 1831 as part of an extended metaphor.
