单词 scyphate
释义

scyphateadj.

/ˈsʌɪfeɪt/
Etymology: < medieval Latin (nummus) scyphatus, traditionally interpreted as ‘cup-shaped (coin)’, < Latin scyphus cup: see scyphus n. However, the term is said to predate the development of concave Byzantine coinage (P. Grierson 1971, in Numism. Chron. 7th Ser. XI. 253–60), and ulterior derivation from colloquial Arabic shiff having a lip, rimmed + Latin -atus has been proposed.
Numismatics.
Of a coin (esp. from the late Byzantine Empire): having the shape of a shallow bowl; concave, cup-shaped.
