单词 birthel-tree
释义

birthel-treen.

Forms: early Middle English birðheltre.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: an element of uncertain origin, tree n.
Etymology: < a first element of uncertain origin (probably ultimately a suffixed form of the Germanic base of bear v.1: see note) + tree n. Compare later birtle n.The first element, early Middle English birðhel- , probably shows -le suffix 1, and can perhaps be interpreted either as an adjective meaning ‘liable to bear (fruit)’ or as a noun denoting (a kind of) fruit (compare later birtle n.). Formally, birðh- appears to be identical with birth n.1 (compare also rare birth v. 1, attested from the same source), but, since a derivation directly < birth n.1 would pose semantic problems, it could independently continue a derivative of the Germanic base of bear v.1 with a dental suffix; compare discussion of other derivatives of this base at birth n.1
Obsolete.
A fruit-bearing tree, a fruit tree.
