单词 scree
释义

screen.

Brit. /skriː/, U.S. /skri/
Forms: 1700s– scree; English regional (northern) 1700s skree; also Scottish 1800s scrae (irregular).
Origin: Probably a borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Probably the reflex of an unattested borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic skriða , Swedish skred , masculine (16th cent., earliest in sense ‘step’), skreda , feminine (end of the 17th cent.), Danish skred , all in sense ‘landslip’) < an ablaut variant (zero-grade) of the Germanic base of scrithe v.The singular scree is probably an inferred singular < the plural screes , showing loss of an original medial ð comparable to that shown by clo'es , colloquial variant of clothes . In form scrae probably by association with brae n.
A steep, often unstable slope on a mountainside formed by a mass of stone fragments and other debris; (as mass noun) the material composing such a slope. Also figurative. In early use chiefly in plural: cf. note at etymology.
