单词 scissorbill
释义

scissorbilln.

Brit. /ˈsɪzəbɪl/, U.S. /ˈsɪzərˌbɪl/
Forms:

α. 1800s– scissorbill.

β. 1800s– scissors-bill.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: scissors n., bill n.2
Etymology: In α. forms < the singular of scissors n. + bill n.2 In β. forms < scissors n. + bill n.2In sense 1 so called on account of the shape of its prominent bill, with lower mandible longer than the upper mandible. Compare similarly scissor beak n. The motivation for use in sense 2 is uncertain; it may perhaps result from comparison of the rapid motion of the pig to that of the bird, perhaps with allusion also to its sharp tusks. Uses in senses 3a and 3b are probably informed by association with both the bird and the pig.
