Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scindere.
Etymology: < classical Latin scindere to split, cleave, to separate, divide in two, to tear apart < the same Indo-European base as shed v.1 Compare French scinder (1791 in sense ‘to cut, divide’). Compare earlier rescind v., abscind v., prescind v., etc., and also scission n., scissure n., etc.
