Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and perhaps also partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin Scincus , -oid suffix, -ian suffix.
Etymology: Originally (as scincoidian ) < scientific Latin Scincus (see scincoid adj. and n.) + -oid suffix + -ian suffix, after French scincoidien (1819). In the form scincoidean after either scientific Latin Scincoidea, superfamily name (see scincoid n.) or other English words in -ean suffix.
Zoology. Now rare.
