Etymology: < (i) Anglo-Norman adjuraciun, Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French adjuration, Middle French adjuracion solemn appeal (second half of the 13th cent. in Anglo-Norman; not paralleled in continental French until considerably later: a1500), instance of swearing under oath (a1325 or earlier), exorcism (c1380), affirmation (a1456), and its etymon (ii) classical Latin adiūrātiōn-, adiūrātiō act of appealing to (someone by something) (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius), in post-classical Latin also invocation (of the name of God in exorcism), exorcism (4th cent.) < adiūrāt- , past participial stem of adiūrāre adjure v. + -iō -ion suffix1.
