单词 scarlatina
释义

scarlatinan.

Brit. /ˌskɑːləˈtiːnə/, U.S. /ˌskɑrləˈtinə/
Forms: 1700s– scarlatina, 1800s scarlettina, 1800s– scarletina.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin scarlatina.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin scarlatina, adjective (Sydenham 1676 in febris scarlatina scarlet fever, probably after scarlet fever n.), feminine of scarlatinus (1527 or earlier) < scarlatum scarlet n. + classical Latin -īnus -ine suffix1. Compare French scarlatine (1827 denoting scarlet fever; 1741 in fièvre scarlatine), Spanish escarlatina (late 18th cent.), Portuguese escarlatina (1813), Italian scarlattina (1772; compare note).Italian scarlattina was used in a medical context by Lancelotti in 1527, but there appears to be considerable doubt among medical historians that what Lancellotti described was actually scarlet fever, and also that there is any connection between Lancellotti's use and Sydenham's use of febris scarlatina.
Chiefly Medicine.
= scarlet fever n. 1. Occasionally: spec. (colloquial): scarlet fever in a mild or uncomplicated form.figurative in quot. 1823.
