Etymology: Old English bléo (bléoh , after féoh) strong neuter = Old Saxon blî , Old Frisian blî , blie , north Frisian bläy < Germanic *blîjo-(m colour, hue. (Not connected with blae adj. and n.) A purely poetical word in Middle English, which gradually became obsolete in the course of the 16th or early in the 17th cent. (not in Shakespeare); but being frequent in ballads and metrical romances, it has been used by one or two modern poets. Compare dialect bly n., thought by some to be a survival of ble.
