1882 Robb & Veley tr. Landolt Handbk. Polariscope iv. 62 A peculiar case of variation of specific rotation occurs in crystallized milk-sugar... As the initial rotation is nearly twice as great as the constant rotation, the name of birotation has been applied to this peculiarity.

1907 J. B. Cohen Org. Chem. Adv. Students I. 100 Freshly prepared solutions of certain sugars change in rotation on standing. The specific rotation of glucose sinks to one-half before becoming constant. The phenomenon was therefore termed birotation.
