Etymology: Aphetic < Old French escantillon, eschantillon (modern French échantillon), of uncertain etymology. According to Hatzfeld & Darmesteter, an alteration (influenced by cantel cantle n.) of *esc(h)andillon , related to Provençal escandith gauge, Italian scandaglio sounding-line; commonly regarded as < Latin scandĕre to climb, to scan v.
Obsolete.
