Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek σχολάρχης.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek σχολάρχης head of a school < ancient Greek σχολή school n.1 + -αρχης -arch comb. form1; partly via post-classical Latin scholarcha (16th cent. in British and continental sources), German Scholarch (early 17th cent. or earlier).Compare the following earlier example of post-classical Latin scholarcha in an English context:1663 M. Nedham Disc. Schools 15 Out of those Masters might be chosen the Scholarcha or Rector of each School.
1. In certain parts of Germany, Switzerland, France, and the former Cape Colony (now part of South Africa): an official, or one of a body of officials, responsible for the inspection of the schools within a city or district. Now historical.
