释义 | Schola Saxonumn. historical. A hostel in Rome for the use of English pilgrims; = English school at school n.1 2.The Schola Saxonum was probably founded in the 8th cent. (according to tradition, by Ine, king of the West Saxons), and was one of several hostels for pilgrims from northern nations. It stood near St Peter's (on the site now occupied by the church of Santo Spirito in Sassia), and for over four hundred years (until its dissolution in 1201) was the centre of English pilgrimage to Rome (see further J. Champ Eng. Pilgrimage to Rome (2000) 25–32).
