Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin schoenobatēs , Greek σχοινοβάτης , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin schoenobatēs (Juvenal) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek σχοινοβάτης tightrope walker ( < ancient Greek σχοῖνος rope (see schoene n.) + -βάτης < the stem of βαίνειν to walk (see basis n.) + -της , suffix forming agent nouns) + -ist suffix. Compare schoenobatic adj.
Obsolete. rare.
A person who performs on a rope stretched between two points at some height above the ground; a tightrope walker.
