Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin schoenus.
Etymology: < classical Latin schoenus Persian and Egyptian measure of length (Pliny) < ancient Greek σχοῖνος rush, reed, rope, Egyptian measure of length (compare Mycenaean Greek ko-no, ko-i-no aromatic plant), of unknown origin.Compare French schène (1753 or earlier).
Now historical and rare.
A measure of distance used in Ancient Egypt and (later) the Ancient Greek and Roman world, the length being variously stated as from 30 to 60 stadia (3½ to 7 miles, equal to approx. 5.63 to 11.27 kilometres respectively).
