Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps (i) a borrowing from Yiddish. Or perhaps (ii) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Yiddish shnoyts ; schnozzle n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps (i) < Yiddish shnoyts snout ( < German Schnauze snout n.1), with the vowel perhaps influenced by that of nozzle n., or perhaps (ii) shortened < schnozzle n.
colloquial (originally and chiefly U.S. and in Jewish usage).
The nose. In quot. 1927 used as a nickname for members of a U.S. vaudeville trio of the 1920s and 30s, comprising Lou Clayton, Eddie Jackson, and James Francis (‘Jimmy’) Durante (cf. schnozzola n.).
