Etymology: < Anglo-Norman scal(o)un = Old French eschalo(i)gne < popular Latin *escalonia, for classical Latin Ascalōnia (sc. cæpa onion), < Ascalon, name of a seaport of Palestine. Compare Spanish escalona; also Italian scalogno ( < Ascalōnium, sc. allium).
