Etymology: Old English seax , sex , sæx (also in combination Northumbrian writsæx ‘writing-knife’, i.e. pen) = Old Frisian sax , Old Saxon, Middle Low German, Old High German, Middle High German saks (also in combination Old High German mez̧z̧isahs , mez̧z̧irahs , Middle High German mez̧z̧eres , mez̧z̧er , modern German messer knife = Old English męteseax ‘meat-knife’), Old Norse sax (Swedish, Danish sax scissors) < Germanic *sahsom , < root *sah- , sag- to cut: see saw n.1In the well-known story related by Geoffrey of Monmouth after ‘Nennius’, the signal given by Hengist to his Saxons for the treacherous slaughter of their British hosts appears in the form ‘Nemet oure saxas’. The Old English form would be Nimað éowre seax, the noun being uninflected in the plural. The two earliest manuscripts of ‘Nennius’ (11th cent.) have respectively saxas and sexa.
