Etymology: < German Schnauzer (1767 or earlier denoting a breed of dog, although this use is rare before the late 19th cent.; also 1858 or earlier as a name given to an individual dog) < Schnauze snout n.¹ + -er -er suffix¹.With the use to denote a breed of dog perhaps compare also German Schnauzer moustache (1848 or earlier).

A breed of wire-haired terrier having a stocky build, a characteristic blunt, bearded muzzle, a black or pepper-and-salt coat, and ears that droop forwards; (also) a dog of this breed.The breed includes distinct large (giant), standard, and miniature varieties.
