Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Schnapps.
Etymology: < German †Schnapps (now Schnaps) any of various strong flavoured spirits (late 18th cent., originally denoting a glass of this) < German regional (Low German) Snapps small amount of spirits (e.g. a glass or a sip; 18th cent. or earlier) < snappen snap v.; so called with reference to the amount of spirits that can be drunk in one go. Compare snaps n.Compare French schnaps, †schnaps strong flavoured spirit (1807), a glass of this (1810; < German).
Any of various strong distilled and flavoured alcoholic drinks. Also: a drink or glass of this. Frequently with modifying word as peach schnapps, peppermint schnapps, etc.Originally in German and Dutch contexts.
