Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymons: German Schmelz, Schmelze.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < German Schmelze (feminine) enamel (18th cent. in this sense; already in Middle High German as smelze denoting a kind of cake; in modern German chiefly in the sense ‘act or action of melting’ (16th cent.)), and partly (in β. forms) < its more common synonym German Schmelz (masculine) (Old High German smelzi , Middle High German smelz ), both < schmelzen to melt (see smelt v.). Compare Schmelzglas n.Forms with -tz- were obsolete in German after the 18th cent.
Any of several varieties of decorative glass produced by flashing (see flash v.1 14a(b)), typically having a marbled or streaked appearance resembling that of agate (agate n. 2).
