Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish zhlob.
Etymology: < Yiddish zhlob, probably < Polish żłób blockhead, extended use of żłób crib, manger (a1405 in Old Polish), of uncertain origin, perhaps < the same Indo-European base as goaf n.1Compare Russian žlob (1923 or earlier; < Polish, perhaps via Yiddish). The β. forms may partly reflect direct borrowing from Polish or Russian.
