Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Yiddish, combined with an English element. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: schlock n., Yiddish meyster ; schlock n., German Meister.
Etymology: < schlock n. + either Yiddish meyster ( < Middle High German meister : see master n.1) or perhaps German Meister master n.1 (in compounds such as Bürgermeister burghermaster n., Kapellmeister (see kapellmeister n. at kapelle n. Derivatives), Rittmeister Rittmeister n.). Compare later meister n.

Originally: an agent who arranges promotional television plugs (now rare). Subsequently: a producer or seller of schlock goods or material, esp. a director of schlock horror films.
