Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Schlamperei.
Etymology: < German Schlamperei (early 19th cent.) < schlampen to be lazy, to dawdle, to be negligent (early 19th cent.; 16th cent. in sense ‘to eat or drink noisily’; of imitative origin) + -erei -ery suffix.
Indolent slovenliness; sloppiness or muddleheadedness, esp. as a supposed characteristic of the Austrian people.
