Etymology: < German Schlagsahne (19th cent.) < schlag- , combining form of schlagen to beat (see slay v.¹) + Sahne cream (15th cent. as sāne: see below).German Sahne is < Middle Low German sān , sāne < Middle Dutch sāne (Dutch zaan ) < Old French saime fat, grease (see seam n.³). The Dutch word was brought to Germany by settlers in the Mark Brandenburg who colonized that region in the Middle Ages. In Austrian German the more usual word is Schlagobers Schlagobers n.

In Austrian and German contexts: whipped cream.
