Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Schläger.
Etymology: < German Schläger duelling sword (late 18th cent.), specific use of Schläger person who hits, instrument for hitting something (see slayer n.1).
A basket-hilted duelling or fencing sword with a blunt tip and a long flat blade sharpened on the edge near the tip, of a type used by German university students in fencing duels (cf. mensur n. 2).Now frequently in the context of historical fencing.

Etymology: < German Schlager popular song, hit song (19th cent.; originally regional (Vienna)), genre of popular music featuring such songs (late 20th cent.), specific sense development of Schlager , variant (now regional) of Schläger killer, person that hits, instrument for hitting (see slayer n.1). Compare hit n. 4.
1. Originally, in German-speaking contexts: a popular song, a hit song. Later usually: spec. a song of the schlager genre (see sense 2).
