单词 saskatoon
释义

saskatoonn.

Brit. /ˌsaskəˈtuːn/, U.S. /ˌsæskəˈtun/, Canadian English /ˌsæskəˈtuːn/
Forms: 1800s sarskutum, 1800s saskatom, 1800s saskatome, 1800s saskatum, 1800s sasketome, 1800s sasketoon, 1800s saskootoom, 1800s saskootum, 1800s saskutten, 1800s saskutum, 1800s sasquetuin, 1800s– saskatoon.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by clipping or shortening.
Etymology: Apparently shortened < an English borrowing (first attested later: see note) < Cree misāskwatōmina, denoting the fruit < misāskwatw-, misāskwat, denoting the plant + -min fruit, berry + -a inanimate plural ending. For (later) evidence of the longer form in English compare †misaskutum berries (a1857 in an apparently isolated attestation in a text recording events before 1812) and †misaskatomina, †mesaskatomina (1858). Compare also the following (reporting events of 1801), which is probably intended to show an animate plural form of the Cree word in an English context:1820 D. Haskel Harmon's Jrnl. Voy. & Trav. N. Amer. 81 Different kinds of berries are now ripe such as..what the Canadians call paires, which the Natives denominate Mis-sasqui-to-min-uck.
Chiefly Canadian.
A shrub or small tree native to northwestern North America, Amelanchier alnifolia (family Rosaceae), having toothed, oval leaves and white flowers. Also: the fruit of this plant, a small purple pome with a sweet, nutty flavour used as a source of food, originally by North American Indians. Recorded earliest in saskatoon berry. Cf. saskatoon berry n.
