Etymology: < bird n. + winged adj.1 Compare slightly later birdwing n.In the specific use after scientific Latin Ornithoptera, genus name (see birdwing n.). With the use in quot. 1911 compare ornithopter n.
Having wings likened to those of a bird; spec. designating butterflies of a group having distinctive long forewings (see birdwing n.).
