单词 sarsaparilla
释义

sarsaparillan.

/sɑːs(ə)pəˈrɪlə/
Forms: α. 1500s–1700s zarza parilla, (1500s parille), 1600s–1700s sarzaparilla, 1500s–1600s sarcaparilla, 1500s sarcaparillia, sarcaperilla, sarsaparilia, 1600s sarsaperilla, 1700s sarsaparill, 1600s– sarsaparilla; β. 1500s–1600s salsaperilla, 1500s–1700s salsaparilla, 1500s salsapariglia, salsaperillia, 1600s salsaparillia, salcepereille, 1800s salsaparilha; γ. 1600s sassaparilla.
Etymology: < Spanish zarzaparrilla, < zarza (? < Basque sartzia) bramble; the latter part is said in A. Matthioli Comm. in Dioscoridem (1565) 184 to be *parilla, diminutive of parra vine, the sarsaparilla being a climbing plant, and its berries having some resemblance to grapes. The word appears, with etymologizing corruption after Italian salso adjective, salt, in Italian salsapariglia (whence the β forms), French salsepareille (whence the γ form). The above etymology is given in Gerarde's Herbal 1597; and (as an original conjecture) in Monlau's Diccionario etimol. de la lengua castellana 1856. The statement of many writers, that the word comes from the name of a Dr. Parillo, has not been traced to any authoritative source.
