Littré suggests that the word is a derivative (with suffix -ˈaria : see -er suffix² 2) of late Latin xērampelinus (medieval Latin corruptly xeropellinus, serampelinus, serapellinus) < Greek ξηραμπέλινος, of the colour of withered vine-leaves, < ξηρός dry, withered + ἄμπελος vine. But this derivation has been contested by later philologists. Compare French dialect (16th cent.) serpol bride's trousseau. Middle Dutch had sarpelier, serplier, pack of wool (also sarpeel).
