Etymology: < sanctus n. + bell n.1Previous versions of the OED give the stress as: ˈsanctus bell.
A bell, commonly placed in a ‘cote’ or turret at the junction of the nave and the chancel (but often a handbell), rung at the Sanctus at Mass; in post-Reformation times often used to summon the people to church, being rung immediately before the service, when the pealing had ceased. (In 16–17th centuries frequently used jocularly or allusively.)
