Etymology: < Italian sardella, diminutive of sarda < Latin sarda, < Greek σάρδη sardine. Compare French †sardelle (16th cent.), German sardelle, Dutch sardel.
A fish, Clupea or Sardinella aurita, resembling the sardine and prepared like it in certain Mediterranean ports.
