Etymology: < Urdu (Persian) sardār < Persian sar head + dār possessor. N.E.D. (1911) enters this under the headword sirdar and gives the pronunciation as (sə̄·ɹdāɹ, səɹdā·ɹ) /ˈsɜːdɑː(r)/, /səˈdɑː(r)/.
